How do you ride?

In my spare time (ha!) I am a member of the Bicycle Advisory Council to the City of Austin and the Urban Transportation Commission, representing District 1.

Both of these groups are tasked with making recommendations to City Council and Transportation and Public Works to advocate for safer street conditions in Austin.

We are lucky to receive presentations from all types of groups who have useful data to share about street safety in Austin, such as:

  • Safe Streets Austin

  • Vision Zero

  • Safe Routes to Schools (a project of Transportation & Public Works)

  • CapMetro Ride Share

  • UT Civil Engineering undergraduate student projects

Yesterday, we heard from the Austin Ridge Riders about the history of their bike group and the volunteer work they do to craft fun and safe mountain bike trails all over Austin.

It reminded me that there are sooooo many ways to ride bikes in Austin.

SO. MANY.

There are so many types of bikes, types of rides, routes, paces, and perks.

I want everyone in Austin to ride bikes! And eat dessert!

So I’m on a mission to compile all the bike resources to make commuting, social riding, and enjoying bikes easy to find online, so you can get offline as quickly as possible.

This is a long-term work-in-progress, so for now, here are the rides coming up, including where you can find La Dolce Vélo:

  • Ride to the Driveway with La Dolce Vélo

    • Thursday, April 17th at 2505 Webberville Rd

    • Meetup at 4pm, wheels down at 4:30pm

    • 4 miles, party pace (~10 mph), 25-30 minutes

    • Stay to watch the Driveway races 5-8pm and ride back together, or leave on your own time

  • Tacos and Tires Bike Show

    • Saturday, April 19th at House Skate Park, 1213 Shoal Creek Blvd*

    • Day Ride: Meetup at 2pm, wheels down at 3pm. Night Ride: Meetup & taco fest at 5pm, wheels down at 8pm

    • Sunday, April 20th at Festival Beach, 1201 Nash Hernandez Senior Rd*

    • Meetup at 12pm, wheels down at 1pm.

    • Party pace - led by Social Cycling Austin.

      • I will be at the Sunday Tacos & Tires ride, NOT Saturday!

I’m visiting family April 22-27 so no La Dolce Vélo sightings scheduled for next week.

BUT DON’T WORRY…I am working on some serious plans for National Bike Month (May!) and more.
